    Gnocchi pizza skillet.

In this one-pan dinner, gnocchi takes the place of pizza dough and is cooked with sausage and veggies before being topped off with pizza sauce, mozzarella and pepperoni. This Skillet Pizza Gnocchi is a quick and easy dinner option for busy weeknights when you have less than 30 minutes to cook.

    Gnocchi with pizza ingredients.

Pizza for dinner with a twist! This one-pan skillet dinner uses potato gnocchi as a base, combined with classic pizza toppings everyone will love. This dish is like a meat lover's pizza with sausage, pepperoni, peppers, and onions, though there is much room for creativity here to make it your way.

One pan dinners (like this Turkey Taco Rice Skillet, One-Pot Cheesy Chicken and Orzo Bake and Easy Homemade Spaghetti O's with Meatballs) are the perfect weeknight dinner. Less dishes to clean, more time spent doing the things you want to be doing, all while still being delicious.

So let's get to making it! The text below offers some tips for making it, or you can scroll down to the bottom for the complete recipe.

    Ingredients and Substitutions

Here is a brief overview of the ingredients needed for this recipe. The full recipe with quantities is listed below this text in the recipe card. If substitutions are available for this recipe, they'll be listed here. If you don't see a substitution you are looking for, please leave a comment below.

    • ground italian sausage (you can make this dish vegetarian by omitting this and the pepperoni and adding in more veggies)
    • red bell pepper (any bell pepper color can work here, or you can omit it)
    • onion
    • pizza seasoning (if you don't have pizza seasoning, you can use italian seasoning, garlic powder and a pinch of red pepper flakes)
    • potato gnocchi (fresh gnocchi found in the prepared food section or shelf-stable gnocchi both work well here)
    • store-bought pizza sauce
    • fresh small mozzarella balls (the small "ciliegine" mozzarella is a nice addition here, but if you only have shredded mozzarella on hand, it is fine to omit this)
    • shredded mozzarella cheese
    • pepperoni (this is a fun addition on top, making it look more like pizza, but it can also be omitted)

    Serving + Leftover Info

This dish is meant to be served as is, given that it is a "complete" meal with starch, veggies, and meat. However, you could serve this with a simple salad like this Cucumber Avocado Salad or, of course, some Easy Garlic Bread!

Skillet gnocchi can be stored as leftovers for up to 2 days.

To reheat you can heat it in an oven-safe container. I love using these (affiliate link) Glass Pyrex Containers because they double as storage and baking dishes. Or, you can reheat briefly in the microwave until warmed through. It’s best to add a few tablespoons of water to the container when you are reheating it.

    Description

In this one-pan dinner, gnocchi takes the place of pizza dough and is cooked together with sausage and veggies before being topped off with pizza sauce, mozzarella and pepperoni. This Skillet Pizza Gnocchi is a fun dinner option for a busy weeknight where you have less than 30 minutes to get dinner on the table.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale
    • 16 ounces ground Italian sausage
    • 1 small red bell pepper, diced fine
    • 1 small onion, diced fine
    • 1 tablespoon pizza seasoning
    • 16 ounces potato gnocchi
    • 1 (15 ounce) jar pizza sauce
    • ½ cup water
    • ½ cup fresh small mozzarella balls (see note)
    • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1 ounce (about ¼ cup) pepperoni (optional)
    • fresh basil (optional)

    Instructions

    1. Cook sausage in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Once cooked through, drain any excess oil, except 1 tablespoon or so.
    2. Add the red pepper and onion and cook until beginning to soften, about 3-5 minutes.
    3. Add in gnocchi and pizza seasoning. Cook until beginning to brown, about 3-5 minutes.
    4. Add in pizza sauce, water and bring up to a boil.
    5. Top with mozzarella and pepperoni, cook with cover for 3 minutes.
    6. If desired, briefly cook under the broiler to crisp up the cheese for 1-2 minutes.
    7. Serve immediately, with fresh basil if desired.

    Notes

Don’t add salt to this recipe. Between the sausage, pizza sauce, seasoning and cheese there is plenty of salt. If you find it lacking, you can add in a bit at the end.

You do not need to add two different types of mozzarella here, but the two different flavors and textures are nice.
