These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges are perfectly seasoned with a smoky blend of spices and have the ideal ratio of crisp edges to tender interiors, making them the best side dish to elevate any dinner.
Similar to sweet potato fries, these Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges are seasoned with smoked paprika, chili powder, and a pinch of cinnamon (trust me) and air-fried until perfectly tender on the inside with bits of crisp edges. I always serve sweet potato wedges with an avocado mayo dip, so I'm sharing that recipe here, too.
Similar to some other air fryer recipes I have ( like Smoky Air Fryer Chicken Thighs and Air Fryer Grilled Cheese), the amount of sweet potatoes you can fit will vary based on your specific air fryer. Making sweet potato wedges in an air fryer is perfect for smaller servings, ideal for a small family. This recipe produces enough as a side dish to serve about 4-6 people. An air fryer is a speedy and convenient choice for a weeknight meal since it preheats faster than a traditional oven!

Ingredients Needed
Here is a brief overview of the ingredients needed for this recipe. The full recipe with quantities is listed below this text in the recipe card. If substitutions are available for this recipe, they'll be listed here. If you don't see a substitution you are looking for, please leave a comment below.
- sweet potatoes (there are lots of different types of sweet potatoes out there, and you can use what you have, but for more in-depth info on this, see the section below labeled "Will They be Crispy?")
- olive oil
- spices: chili powder, smoked paprika + ground cinnamon
- Avocado oil spray (or similar air fryer-safe oil for coating the basket)
- ground black pepper + coarse kosher salt (This recipe was tested using Diamond Crystal coarse kosher salt. If you use Morton's kosher salt or fine salt, decrease the volume by half)
For the avocado mayo dip you'll need:
- 1 large ripe avocado, pitted, peeled, and TK
- ⅓ cup mayo
- 2 tablespoons lime juice, more as needed
How to Safely Cut Wedge Fries
Safety first, always! Cutting the sweet potato wedges is quite simple, but there is a safe way and an unsafe way to do it!
To safely cut the wedges:
- Start with scrubbed and dried sweet potatoes.
- Place the sweet potato on a flat steady surface. Carefully cut the sweet potato in half lengthwise.
- Then place those halves flat side down. Using a steady surface helps prevent slips.
- Then, depending on the size of the sweet potato, cut each half into 3-6 wedges each.
How to Make Them
It's a good place to remind you that there are so many different types of air fryers out there. Air fryers vary widely in terms of capabilities, capacities, and basket styles. It's important to acknowledge this variation when it comes to any recipe for the air fryer. You might need to adjust the cooking times based on your air fryer.
Additionally, if you have a smaller air fryer, you might need to cook in batches. Remember to avoid overcrowding the basket, allowing ample space between the sweet potatoes to promote proper air circulation and achieve crispy perfection.
Step 1: Add potatoes, spices, oil and salt to a bowl.
Step 2: Toss together the evenly coat.
Step 3: Preheat the air fryer and spray the basket. Air fry for 9 minutes, then flip the potato wedges.
Step 4: Return to the air fryer to cook for about 9 more minutes, or until the sweet potato is tender with crispy edges.
Making the Avocado Dip
This refreshing dip provides the perfect contrast to the smokey spiced sweet potatoes. It's easiest to make in a mini food processor, requiring just the press of a button. Alternatively, if you don't have one, you could use a blender or even mash the ingredients together until smooth.
Add all the ingredients to a mini food processor (or blender).
Process until the dip is smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning adding more lime or salt as needed.
But Will They Be Crispy?
Let me be upfront: there aren't any surefire tricks to achieving the same level of crispiness with sweet potato fries as you'd get with regular potato fries. Over the years, I've experimented with various methods like parboiling, using cornstarch, and soaking overnight, but the reality is that regardless of what method you use, sweet potatoes tend to lose their crispness shortly after they stop cooking.
This is largely because sweet potatoes generally have a higher moisture content and behave differently than white potatoes. While there are several sweet potato varieties available, the most common ones found in grocery stores are orange sweet potatoes (also called Garnet sweet potatoes). Yellow sweet potatoes, sometimes labeled as Jewel, are similar in texture. On the other hand, white sweet potatoes, known as Hannah or Japanese, have a lower moisture content and tend to crisp up better, especially in an air fryer. However, they won't have the same creamy interior as orange and yellow sweet potatoes.
You can use any sweet potato you want. But it's important to set realistic expectations: sweet potatoes will cook differently than regular potatoes. They'll develop crispy caramelized bits but remain soft and tender towards the middle. Enjoy them promptly while they're still crispy before moisture softens them.
Storing Leftovers
Sweet potato wedges are best served immediately.
Unfortunately, they don't store well—at least not in the sense that they will stay crisp (see above). But that doesn't mean they aren't delicious heated up later. You can keep leftovers for 2-3 days and reheat them in an oven or toaster oven.

Description
These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges are perfectly seasoned with a smoky blend of spices and have the ideal ratio of crisp edges to tender interiors, making them the best side dish to elevate any dinner.
Ingredients
For Sweet Potato Wedges:
- 3 medium sweet potatoes (about 1-½ pounds) scrubbed and cut into 6-8 wedges
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1-½ teaspoons coarse kosher salt (see note)
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Avocado oil spray (or similar air fryer-safe oil for coating the basket)
For Avocado Mayo Dip:
- 1 large ripe avocado, halved, pitted, and flesh scooped out

Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 425ºF.

- Lightly coat the air fryer basket with oil (I use a non-aerosol avocado oil spray), then place the potato wedges in it, spaced evenly apart.
- Place the basket in the air fryer and cook the potatoes for about 18 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the sweet potatoes are tender and lightly browned.
- While the potatoes are cooking, process the avocado, mayo, lime juice, and salt in a mini food chopper (or by hand) until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt or lime juice as needed.
- Serve the sweet potato wedges immediately with the avocado mayo for dipping.
Notes
Peeling the sweet potatoes is based on personal preference.
